Extra solar becomes kWh credit
When you produce more than you use in a billing period, the net excess is credited as kilowatt-hours on the following bill.
Unused credit ends in March

A second meter for production
Lehi installs a production meter; the homeowner provides its meter base within 5 feet of the main service disconnect.

Sizing Solar Panel Installation Lehi Homes Get Right
Because Lehi credits extra solar as kilowatt-hours, summer surplus can carry your bills into fall and winter. That makes it reasonable to size a Lehi system to cover most or all of a year's usage — a goal that rarely makes sense on Rocky Mountain Power's low export credit.
The limit is the March reset. Credits left over at the March billing period are surrendered without payment, so a system that produces far more than you use builds a credit balance that simply disappears. Lehi's Solar Power Purchase Program, Explained
Lehi also runs a Solar Power Purchase Program, sometimes called a feed-in arrangement. Instead of offsetting your own bill, your system's output goes to the city grid under a 20-year fixed-price agreement: 5¢ per kWh for systems from 1 to 10 kW, and 4¢ per kWh above 10 kW. The program has a $1,500 application fee, the city keeps the renewable credits, and the city may adjust the price with council approval.
For most homeowners who use their own power, standard net metering is the better fit, because a kWh credited against your bill is worth your full retail rate. The purchase program can make sense for larger systems or owners who want a separate, predictable payment. We'll lay out both if your project could qualify.
Do Batteries Make Sense With Lehi Solar?
Honestly, the case is different in Lehi. On Rocky Mountain Power, a battery earns its keep partly by storing solar that would otherwise export for about 4–5¢. Lehi's kWh-for-kWh credit already gives exported solar its full value, so a battery's main benefit here is outage backup — keeping the fridge, furnace fan, internet and lights running when the grid goes down.
That's still worth a lot to many families. Rocky Mountain Power's Wattsmart Battery rebate doesn't apply to Lehi City Power customers, and Lehi's standards note that systems with batteries may need additional review.
