Roof attachments, rails, flashing and the crew's time. This is where a cheap quote often hides problems: fewer attachments, no flashing, or a subcontracted crew. 04Five Things That Move an Orem Price Up or Down

1. Roof material

   Asphalt shingles are the simplest. Tile needs special hooks and careful handling, and metal needs clamps, so both add labor.

2. Your electrical panel

   Orem's checklist asks which panel the system back-feeds and its rating. An older or full panel may need an upgrade first.

3. Roof layout and shade

   Panels spread over several small faces, or around trees, often call for microinverters or optimizers, which cost more per watt.

4. Equipment tier

   Higher-efficiency panels and longer warranties raise the price per watt; they also squeeze more power onto a small roof.

5. Adding a battery

   Storage is its own line item. On Rocky Mountain Power, a battery on the Wattsmart list, like the Tesla Powerwall 3, can earn $2,000 when a single unit is rated 10 kW or more, and it opens the time-of-use option covered below.

05Orem's Solar Permit, Step by Step

Orem's Building Safety Division at 56 North State Street requires full online submittal for building permits, and solar panels are on the city's list of work that needs one.

1. Account and application

   Filed through Orem's online building permit portal, which also tracks review and schedules inspections.

2. Site plan and mounting details

   Every PV component on the property, the roof attachment system and its weight, whether rafters are engineered trusses (or their size and type if not), and the roof covering with its number of layers.

3. One-line diagram

   Inverter type, module count and wiring, conduit, breaker ratings, and which panel the system back-feeds, with its location and rating.

4. Equipment sheets

   Module and inverter specifications; grid-tied inverters must be listed "utility interactive" under UL 1741 with ground-fault protection.

5. Array numbers

   Total watts, amps and open-circuit voltage at the coldest expected temperature, a step not required for microinverter systems.

6. Review, install, inspect

   The permit is priced by valuation, with plan review set at the lesser of 65% of the permit fee or actual cost. After inspection, Rocky Mountain Power grants permission to operate.

Rocky Mountain Power offers Schedule 1 customers an optional time-of-use rate. Power is cheap most of the day and expensive from 6 to 10 p.m. on weekdays, which is exactly when solar fades and a battery can take over.

Customers who enroll stay on it for at least a year, so it suits homes that can run the evening from a battery, not homes that cook, wash and charge an EV at 7 p.m. straight off the grid.
