Two honest notes on price. First, cheaper per-watt quotes often come from oversizing: a bigger system lowers the per-watt number but sends more power to the grid for a small credit. Second, the 30% federal tax credit for homeowner-owned systems ended December 31, 2025. Some leases and power purchase agreements still pass along a business credit, so compare the total cost of each option, not just the monthly payment.
How the Salt Lake City Solar Permit Works
Salt Lake City Building Services requires a Solar Permit Application with a completed Solar PV Permit Packet for rooftop and ground-mounted systems. The packet covers project details — system size in kW, roof or ground mounting, the type of inverter — along with a site plan showing where the major components go and an electrical diagram of the array, wiring, overcurrent protection, inverter, disconnects, required labels and the connection to the home.
The city reviews each project in four areas: structural, electrical, zoning and fire. Fire review exists because firefighters need clear paths on the roof, so array layout matters from the first design. Once issued, a permit becomes void if work doesn't start within 180 days, or if it stops for 180 days — another reason a clear schedule matters.

Net Billing for Salt Lake City Homes
Salt Lake City homes are served by Rocky Mountain Power, so new solar is on Schedule 137 net billing. Solar you use at home saves your full retail rate; solar you export earns 4.855¢ per kWh from June through September and 4.033¢ the rest of the year. Adding a Battery in Salt Lake City
Grid-tied solar shuts off during an outage, so panels alone don't keep your lights on.
